Absolute Encoder development and production
Absolute Encoders are electromechanical angular position transducers, being rotary devices that convert the angular position of their rotating axis into electrical pulses. They are called ‘absolute’ because they instantaneously code the position of the rotor in respect of a zero point, thus providing an absolute reference. Such fact is converted into numerical data via a special circuit and can therefore be processed by an external PLC control, counter or positioner. In magnetic encoders, the position is measured through detection — with a fixed sensor — of the magnetic flux generated by a magnetised rotating disk.
Operation
Unlike incremental encoders, both in mono- and multi-turn absolute rotary encoders, the signals code the instantaneous position of the rotor, which is then processed to obtain data on the displacement direction and speed. The advantage of this type of encoder is that even in case of power failure, the measurement is not lost, being in fact absolute. The difference between mono- and multi-turn encoders is that in the first type only the angular position is read, whilst in the latter, the number of turns made by the axis is also measured. In magnetic encoders, the position is detected by measuring with a fixed sensor the variation of the magnetic flux generated by a rotating disk. This contactless system eliminates any wear and tear issues, thus increasing the life of the absolute magnetic encoder.
